We’d all like to be just a little more productive, but it’s not always so easy. We’re faced with a million distractions, from the time we wake up to the time we head to bed. Kids, notifications, last-minute changes of schedule, and oh, the dog peed on the carpet AGAIN.

We have some ability to determine the route our day will take from the second our alarms go off. It’s no secret that mindset is half the battle. With a bit of planning, determination, and discipline, it’s possible to set a morning routine that could double or even triple your productivity!

Start with a gentle alarm

Personally, I prefer Apple’s Bedtime setting on the Clock app. Set your bedtime and morning alarm to determine exactly the number of hours you’ll get to rest. With regular use, better sleep habits form and you’ll find yourself waking with more energy. Best of all, pick from a series of alarms designed to bring you gently into wakefulness. Set a positive mood for the day from the start, minus blaring, beeping, or trumpeting.

 

Eat a real breakfast

Yes, you’ve heard this a million times before. It’s time to get on it! People with an unhealthy diet are 66 percent more likely to experience productivity loss than those who regularly eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables. So start your morning with a fruit smoothie, soaked oats, or a breakfast sandwich! Pro tip: throw together breakfast the night before and save it in the fridge.

Get Chilly

Take a cool-to-cold 5-minute shower. Keeping the water cold has been shown to have multiple health benefits, including improving circulation, strengthening immunity, and increasing general energy and well-being. Do this every morning and track your productivity for a week to see how it’s working for you. No need to make it miserably cold, keep it refreshing and enjoy the boost of wakefulness!

 

Meditation

Before sitting down (or standing) at your desk, take 10 minutes to meditate. Meditation counteracts stress and prepares you to tackle the day’s challenges with a fresh mind. It can also actively help reduce pain associated with headaches. And in the end, 10 minutes is less than 1% of your day, so no excuses! Make your mental health a priority and watch your productivity skyrocket.


Stay disconnected until it’s time to work.

This is the most important tip to increase your productivity via a morning routine! Do NOT pick up your phone, check your email, scroll through Facebook, or flip on the TV before your morning routine is completed. Allow your mind time to wake up without the bombardment of social media notifications. Just because you work from home does not mean you’re always available online. Enjoy your morning routine, leave work for its own time, and come to your desk refreshed, prepared, and ready to go.
